The term motivation is used to explain the force with the help of which humans obtain the organizational goals. There are two major ways through which humans can be motivated. This includes intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Individuals who are intrinsically motivated are interested in achieving the organizational goals and objectives (Bateman & Crant, 2003). An intrinsic motivated person is not much interest in the external pressures or rewards. However, unlike an intrinsic motivated person, extrinsic one needs some rewards such as remunerations or compensations..

For instance, a person may be intrinsically motivated by different financial rewards or job promotion. The individual who is not interested in the job carried out, but is interested in getting the reward will do everything possible to satisfy his or her needs. In contrast to intrinsic motivation, extrinsic one means that individuals are more interested in the job carried out (Kreps, 1997). Therefore, under intrinsic motivation, an individual can be motivated through improvement of the working environment such as office partitioning. An individual who is intrinsically motivated does not require rewards so as to perform a certain task.

As a matter of fact, individuals who are intrinsically motivated provide the better result in comparison to those who are extrinsically motivated. This is due to the fact that intrinsically motivated individuals are interested in realizing the goals of the company, in the process itself rather than indulging their own ambitions (Benabou & Tirole, 2003). On the other hand, extrinsically motivated individuals might not have any interest in the task they are performing but are forced to perform it only because they are interested in the rewards that follow the job completion. Therefore, extrinsically motivated individuals aim at maximizing the share on the reward rather than the quality of the job. Intrinsically motivated individuals tend to provide better performance comparing to extrinsically motivated individuals.
