In the modern world, technology has brought innovation in the operation and application in many fields. The medicine is among the fields, which have been affected by changes in technology; now the use of computers is perceived to be a safe way of storing patient's records. As a result, various terminologies have been implemented to incorporate the professional language used in healthcare centers to ensure the smooth course of activities. Such terminologies are developed by the mean of different approaches, which ensure different levels of standardization of the terminologies used in the nursing field. Additionally, different methods can be used to ensure the appropriate implementation and use of various terminologies. The nursing language supports data collection, which could then be used to carry out research in the related field. Since such terminologies have various benefits and barriers, it is important to develop standards for using the terminologies. Consequently, nursing terminologies are critical in the field of medicine as they help to determine how the patients are treated.
One of the terminologies used is Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS). The vocabulary was developed by considering the most common nursing vocabulary used to describe various diagnoses, interventions and patients' outcomes. As a result, this makes it easier for nurses to carry out operations without dedicating much effort to the identification of a particular condition (Morton, Petersen, Chard, & Kleiner, 2013). The vocabularies offer a wide range of information about a wide range of known disorders and illnesses. The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) fulfills the maintenance of the language. The association is responsible for ensuring that all the developed terminologies are standardized across the medical field. Moreover, the terminologies should be universal as they might have a different meaning to the patients, who came across the same information in the past (Morton et al., 2013). In addition, changing such terminologies might also cause confusion among the nurses that can result in a mismatch in patient's records. Such mismatch can lead to a diagnosis of the wrong illness hence threatening the health of a patient.
Among the methods that can be used to ensure the consistent use of the language is the provision of guidelines to all the medical training centers to ensure that the right information is conveyed to both practicing and training physicians. As a result, such a method would ensure that the trainees use the right vocabulary appropriately as stated in the guidelines (Tastan et al., 2014). A practicing physician has to learn the guidelines while in training which will be applicable in health centres. Such guidelines can also be issued at the healthcare centers to ensure that every concerned employee is updated about any changes regarding the vocabulary. The language helps in the collection of useful data through the classification of the information. A good example is the case when a researcher decides to collect information about a particular illness and the ways of diagnosing it. With the help of such a vocabulary, an individual will be able to perform the right classification and interpretation of the data for the purpose of future studies and consistency in operation (Törnvall & Jansson, 2015).
The benefits of using this language is the fact that it makes the nursing operation and application easier to perform since the necessary terminologies are already standardized and available. Therefore, the chances of making a wrong diagnosis are minimal. The terminologies provide assurance of good medical care of the patients through the consistent interpretation of diagnosis results. Moreover, the failure to understand such vocabularies can result in a negative impact on the life of the patient since the nurse may end up diagnosing a wrong illness by providing a different standardized vocabulary. Moreover, a wide range of medical schools and facilities make it difficult to implement the standardization of the vocabularies provided by the organization.
Other nursing terminologies include Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC), which is a database used internationally to analyze and identify all the medical lab observations. The Regenstrief Institute implements the development and maintenance of the database, which is a nonprofit medical research organization. The database was developed to satisfy the need for an electronic database for clinical management and care (Zunner, Bürkle, Prokosch, &Ganslandt, 2013). In fact, it is also available to the public at no cost. Additionally, the database contains laboratory codes, nursing interventions, nursing diagnosis, patient's care data sets and outcomes classification. The standardization of this database is maintained through the updates of the software in order to ensure that all the vocabulary is in agreement with the organizational guidelines. The nursing language ensures data collection by using a set of electronic information exchanges. Therefore, researchers are able to get the necessary information for their studies. Because of such studies, the organization responsible for the maintenance of the database can come up with system upgrades, which help in the classification of lab reports. Similarly, the obtained data can be archived for future studies. Furthermore, the collected information can be used at medical schools to ensure that the graduates have all the necessary information and skills in their field of practice (Törnvall & Jansson, 2015).
In this respect, the benefits of the database are the following: first, nurses are able to interpret results according to the standards; they can also exchange information of the medical laboratory codes about better methods of patients’ diagnosis. Second. The database makes the work at hospitals easier by saving time dedicated to manual delivery of the laboratory reports. Finally, it enhances uniformity as all practitioners are provided with a standard procedure and information while providing services. However, data has some limitation and barriers that reduces its efficiency. Among the limitation of using this database is that it is complicated and requires a lot of intelligence for one use. Another limitation is that, it is possible for a nurse to send wrong information or even use wrong laboratory codes that might lead to making a wrong diagnosis to patients. Additionally, it prolongs the procedure of administering as physician are supposed to adhered to the stipulated standard as a reference
The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) is another nursing terminology that is used to develop research, disseminate, and refine the nomenclature and taxonomy of the nursing diagnoses. NANDA has a broad membership in different countries; it was developed according to all the criteria used by nurses in the medical field. Therefore, for the purpose of consistency in implementation and application of the terminology, the organization responsible for its development conducts thorough researches to ensure that all the information is in harmony with the current nursing standards. Therefore, such a technique ensures that all the nurses are aware of the requirements at any given point in their career. In addition, the update of such an information ensures that the vocabularies used in medical schools are in accordance with the standard vocabularies (Escalada-Hernandez, Muñoz-Hermoso, & Larranaga, 2013). Moreover, the use of the NANDA vocabulary makes it easier for medical researchers to understand the nursing taxonomy.
The benefit of using NANDA vocabulary is the fact that it acts as a measure for evaluation of all the nursing activities; such an evaluation can be used for the development of better strategies to benefit the nurses and patients. The qualitative and quantitative measurements obtained from the assessments of the nursing taxonomy provide sufficient information, which acts as the basis for the adjustments of the vocabulary. The main barrier to using this vocabulary is the fact that it is only applicable to a few countries, and, therefore, this makes it difficult for foreigners to understand and differentiate it from other nursing vocabularies (Escalada-Hernandez et al., 2013).
Concisely, the nursing language is very important in every aspect of the medical field since it determines the manner of patient treatment. As a result, clear standards should be developed to eliminate all the misunderstandings that can occur in the event when every nurse can twist the language to fit their wishes. Therefore, such standardization is important since it makes the exchange of medical information easy. Moreover, the use of standardized language provides a uniform database for storing the patients' records that is useful in case one of the nurses is not available. Various languages in the nursing field play different roles in effecting the career and, therefore, their developers should carry out consistent research to ensure that the language remains as much consistent as possible. Many terminologies exist in the nursing field, and it is the obligation of every nurse to ensure that they understand all the necessary vocabulary to avoid a mismatch of information or even the wrong diagnosis of illnesses. Most of the disadvantages are imposed on the patient; therefore, a change is necessary since the language is made for nurses to treat patients effectively. Wrong diagnosing of diseases at a health center could result in a loss of trust of the patients and challenges in the nurses' careers. Therefore, everyone should fulfill all the requirements effectively to ensure a mutual benefit.
