For many centuries, fiction literature used to reveal great stories and deep images of characters. Besides, authors can allocate their protagonists with different traits either with braveness, courage, and endurance or cowardice, craftiness, and pity. Consequently, readers are able to acquire some useful qualities or understand, which behavior is not worth imitating. Fiction writers usually create strong characters so that to inspire or motivate the audience to contemplate things they would like to do in their life. J. K. Rowling is one of the most famous fictionists who creates powerful leaders in her stories. The series of Harry Potter books presents a leader who overcomes various life challenges due to his leadership traits and skills.

Harry, a young man from the series of books about Harry Potter, is an outstanding example of youthful courage and aspiration for the good. Due to the fact that the series consists of several books, it is better to choose the first one in order to follow the formation of the boy’s leadership practices from the very beginning. As a result, the first book called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone introduces the juvenile who lives with the family of his uncle Mr. Dursley and pursues his dream to abandon this house and make all his wishes come true. However, the future wizard frequently suffers from the torments and bullies of his cousin. Nevertheless, soon he will be rewarded for these life challenges (Burbank, 2014). Hence, a large number of letters are delivered to Harry but his uncle tries to prevent the boy from reading them. Finally, Mr. Dursley takes his family to a secluded island on the Harry’s eleventh birthday. Hagrid who has been sending all the letters to the young man arrives and invites Harry to join him. In such a strange and mysterious way, the journey of the famous wizard begins.

Harry’s next station is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where all exciting and mysterious adventures are about to happen. While traveling to school, Harry befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger who support him until the last book. At school, Harry Potter learns different subjects related to magical processes and arrangements. Furthermore, the boy is selected for the football team where he also succeeds. The young man studies diligently and opens the world of magic with his comrades. Later on, Harry discovers that someone whose name is Voldemort has killed his parents and tried to take his life. Therefore, such a revelation forces Harry to understand that things are not as a simple as they seem. Moreover, numerous mysteries surround the school corridors. Consequently, three first-year students decide to solve the enigma. Subsequent events bring the junior wizard to the mystery of the Sorcerer’s Stone, which Voldemort aims at stealing. As a result, Harry decides to prevent this. Together with his friends, he fights against Voldemort who possesses the Quirrell’s body and in the long run Harry faints. When the boy comes to his senses, he finds that he has been saved by Dumbledore and the stone has been destroyed.

Harry Potter is a strong character, which attracts the readers’ attention from the very beginning. He reveals and exhibits his leadership traits and skills in different difficult situations throughout the whole story. Firstly, he is not afraid of new discoveries and changes. Being deprived of the family care and attention, the boy struggles for the better future. As every great leader, Harry chooses good people to support and accompany him. Despite the fact that he has a real chance to be with those who can make him powerful and famous, the wizard understands the value of true friends. In the course of the whole story line Harry Potter notices various details and analyzes them in order to see the general picture. Leaders usually examine things by deductive reasoning as Harry Potter does (Mitchell, 2011). For example, he always pays attention to other’s feelings, words, and surrounding environment. Hence, this gives him the opportunity to predict future events.

As a true leader, Harry is eager to learn from others who are more experienced. The boy realizes that nobody is perfect and no one knows everything; therefore, sometimes it is better to defer in favor of better leaders. Therefore, Harry usually listens to the pieces of advice of his headmaster who has superior knowledge and skills. Hence, learning from others can be beneficial for self-development and improvement. One of the most important qualities leaders should have is courage (Poole, 2017). Harry is very brave and proves this in the encounter with every life obstacle. The young wizard always tends to solve the problems on his own. Unlike Hogwarts students and even some professors, the boy goes to the places, which scare others. For instance, while fighting for the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry realizes that he can die; thus, this outcome cannot make him stop struggling for the good. In addition, Harry treats everybody fairly. Furthermore, such figures as a goblin, an elf or a witch deserve his respectful attitude. Moreover, when it comes to salvation of the world, he is ready to sacrifice his life, which can be considered a true leadership selfless act.

Numerous situation enabled Harry Potter to show his leadership traits. One of the most famous scenes where Harry proves that he can not only be courageous but also lead his team to victory is the first game of Quidditch. He rapidly adapts to the rules of the game and tries to contribute to its positive final results. Despite being bullied by the members of opposite team, he sets a goal and does everything possible to achieve it. Hence, Harry decides to catch a small ball, which brings plenty of points to the Gryffindor house. The wizard uses all his strength and skills to follow the ball and in the long run catches it. Consequently, his team gets many points and wins the competition. Considering the leadership theories, leaders traditionally tend to influence others in order to attain an established objective (Northouse, 2009). Harry understands the important role of teamwork and collaboration while reaching certain target. According to the social identity theory, joining the team the boy not only becomes its valuable part but is also believed to be a group prototype who represents and leads the team (Northouse, 2009). Besides, Harry’s aim is not to outstand against the background of other students but to be a part of the team. Nevertheless, being praised by members of his house and professors, Harry Potter does not have a sense of grandeur about himself, on the contrary, he seems to be modest. Moreover, as a good leader, the wizard is always ready to give his help and support to those who really need this.

While analyzing the book of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the last scene is the brightest example, which reveals Harry’s leadership qualities. While fighting against Voldemort, the boy undoubtedly takes the risk on his own shoulders and bravely protects his friends. Additionally, he possesses strong self-confidence and sense of self identity, which are important leadership qualities (Northouse, 2009). An admirable trait of his character is also the fact that despite the evil intentions of his enemy, the young wizard wants to reach a good end for both sides. For instance, considering this last episode, he tries to negotiate with Quirrell first, as Harry understands that Voldemort takes possession of Quirrell’s body and controls the latter. Hence, the boy believes that not everything has been lost yet and he can help Quirrell become good again. As a result, Harry appears to be sympathetic, which is a valuable leadership quality since usually the majority of leaders tend to pursue their goals neglecting others’ feelings and emotions (Scott, 2011). Furthermore, he is well aware of the situation and contemplates steps to be made. Thus, in case of any unexpected changes or challenges, Harry can immediately decide what should be done and predict the consequences of his actions.

In conclusion, the series of Harry Potter is a great example of leadership in fiction. J. K. Rowling created strong characters behaving in the way appropriate for good leaders. Moreover, the protagonist of her books, Harry Potter, demonstrates the most significant leadership traits and skills helping him overcome different life challenges and obstacles.
